This project began as a reflection on the biological processes of growth and decay as well as the cycles of growth and decay inherent to human experience.
The project centers around my personal experiences with cancer. Growth and deterioration is inherent in the relationship between the cancer and the patient. Cancer is repulsive yet demands attention. Cancer brings unimaginable pain, fear, and deterioration while eliciting great displays of physical and emotional strength, self reliance and faith. The process of creating these paintings pushed me through my own cycles of anger and acceptance. I intended for the imagery and subject matter to remain ambiguous as my own relationship with the subject will always be complex. Acrylic and charcoal on pine aprox: 4ft X 7ft.
